Mini-webinar: Disparities in kidney care and the role of cystatin C

Written by Kristin Hart | Nov 30, 2023 8:14:20 AM

In the series of mini-webinars on cystatin C and kidney health our Global Product Manager for Cystatin C Mr. Gaute Tangen, focuses on cystatin C eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) as a potential enhancer of accuracy and reliability of estimating kidney function.

Watch webinar:  Disparities in kidney care

In this webinar we will look into the two articles published in The New England Journal of Medicine discussing how the new creatinine- and cystatin C-Based equations to estimate GFR can help overcome challenges related to disparities in kidney diagnostics:

Previous mini-webinar: Cystatin C, creatinine and eGFR equations

This webinar discuss the origins of disparities in kidney care, starting from the context within the United States connected to the process towards unbiased GFR assessments:

  • Cystatin C for earlier diagnosis of CKD
  • The recommendation to remove the race factor from creatinine equations
  • The ideal combination of creatinine and cystatin C

The background: Disparities in kidney care and cystatin C

A joint taskforce by the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) recommends increased utilisation of cystatin C in combination with creatinine for more unbiased GFR assessments. The European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFC) has followed up on the initiative from the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-Epi) addressing the race factor in eGFR equations in a recent study with data from over 227 000 patients. Based on the results they have developed a new cystatin C-based eGFR equation that doesn't factor in race or gender, ensuring accurate GFR estimation without compromising precision compared to creatinine equations.

The Gentian Cystatin C Immunoassay

Gentian Diagnostics introduced its turbidimetric cystatin C immunoassay in 2006. The the open-channel test shows a well-documented accuracy across various clinical chemistry analysers, offering rapid results in as little as 10 minutes.
