Canine CRP testing in the US - Growing adoption of Gentian’s assay

Canine CRP testing: Growing recognition in the US

During the last years, awareness and adoption of canine C-reactive protein (CRP) testing have grown steadily among veterinarians and veterinary laboratories in the United States. CRP is increasingly recognized as a reliable inflammatory biomarker that provides valuable insights for diagnosis, monitoring and routine health checks in dogs.

The Gentian Canine CRP test in North America

The Gentian Canine CRP assay has been available in the US and Canadian market for over a decade. However, in recent years there has been a marked increase in both interest and usage. This positive trend is driven by a broader recognition of CRP as a valuable inflammatory biomarker in dogs.

This growth is driven by two key factors:

  • Clinical adoption: More veterinary laboratories are implementing the assay into their routine workflows
  • Expanding application: CRP testing is now used not only in suspected cases of infection or inflammatory disease but also as part of routine screening of all canine patients

Our US sales & application team highlights that more practices are implementing CRP as a standard biomarker for evaluation of canine health.

Canine CRP - Effective marker for detecting inflammation in dogs

CRP is a highly effective marker for detecting inflammation, especially in dogs presenting with symptoms indicative of infection or other inflammatory diseases. Additionally, it serves as a crucial screening biomarker for asymptomatic dogs, aiding in the early detection of occult disease during health evaluations.

Many veterinary practices in the US now perform the assay routinely on all canine patients for screening purposes, while others reserve its use for specific cases such as suspected neoplasia or to monitor treatment response during antibiotic therapy.

Customer success in the US

While a lot of the veterinarians now order the CRP test as part of a broad health screening panel for all canine patients, others apply it selectively in cases where inflammation is suspected or when treatment monitoring is required.

We’ve seen a clear increase in demand for canine CRP testing in the US and Canada. Laboratories and clinics are recognizing the clinical value of CRP as a biomarker - both for early detection and for treatment monitoring. CRP is also recognized as a fast and effective marker compared to for instance complete blood cell count which is impacted by a lot of external factors such as stress, breed and excitement. We supply our customers directly from our US warehouse and are only a phone call away.
